Program Description:
SIT Study Abroad Vietnam: Intensive Vietnamese Language (Beginning, Intermediate & Advanced | Summer Online)

Learn Vietnamese, the official language of Vietnam and the common language of the country’s ethnic minorities.

You will study Vietnamese online for three weeks in July 2020, followed by an optional three weeks in Vietnam in January 2021. Both the online and January terms are taught by experienced Vietnamese language teachers who will guide, encourage, and facilitate learning through online intensive language practice and field-based settings. SIT will conduct placement tests to identify your language level. For beginning students, the online course focuses on pronunciation, practical vocabulary, and conversational language patterns. Aside from online group sessions, language instructors will work with you individually to develop speaking and listening skills. This online course will prepare students to be both Vietnamese language proficient and culturally ready for an optional three-week January term in Vietnam.

Program Highlights
  • Develop practical language skills in a supportive learning environment.
  • Build confidence during individualized tutorials.
  • Put language skills to use while living with a Vietnamese family. (J-Term)
  • Use language skills during field excursions in Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta. (J-Term)

Program Structure

This course offers a three week online course in July 2020 followed by an optional three week January-term in Vietnam. The online course is open to all applicants. The in-person January-term is open to college undergraduates who have completed the online term or who provide proof of completion (or the equivalent) of at least one semester of language study.

July Online Course Details

The online term is designed for a range of learners, from those who want to become fluent in the Vietnamese language to those who want to learn conversational phrases and vocabulary. It’s also for anyone seeking to simply communicate with your Vietnamese friends or neighbors.

It is designed to teach you Vietnamese in the shortest possible time by using strategies to help you understand popular phrases and short sentences, as well as how to properly pronounce the challenging tones and accents of Vietnamese. You can expect to learn to communicate conversationally in Vietnamese with everyday Vietnamese phrases and to learn Vietnamese tone and pronunciation. You will learn how to travel around Vietnam and how to order food at a restaurant in Vietnam.

Optional January-term Course Details

This three-week January term will enhance your Vietnamese proficiency and help you quickly become an active participant in Vietnamese culture and community. Our language instructors will share their insights and experiences in Vietnam, enabling you to actively participate in the community around you. You can expect to learn Vietnamese not only from interactions in class, but also through immersive experiences outside of campus including with your homestay families in Ho Chi Minh City and interactions with local peers. Field excursions will include sites in the Mekong Delta and various non-governmental organizations in Ho Chi Minh City.
