SIT Study Abroad Senegal: Wolof Language (Beginning & Intermediate | Summer Online)
Develop your Wolof language skills through online and classroom learning, as well as cultural immersion and experiential learning activities in the capital city Dakar and its surrounding regions.
Wolof in Senegal holds the status of a lingua franca for the great majority of the population and is key to understanding Senegalese culture and realities. In fact, it is spoken by more than 70 percent of Senegalese citizens of diverse ethnic backgrounds.
This program will be delivered through a three-credit online course and a three-credit immersion course in Dakar, Senegal. Although they may be taken separately, the courses are designed to complement each other to give students an in-depth knowledge of the Wolof language and understanding of the culture and values of which it is the vehicle.
- Develop and practice your Wolof skills in a vibrant and welcoming Wolof-speaking environment both through online and in-country courses.
- Engage with Wolof through popular forms of art, such as music, poetry, scandalous soap operas, and more.
- Experience daily life with homestay families in Dakar and Popenguine. (J-Term)
- Visit people and places to enhance your Wolof language learning experience and gain strong insights into Senegalese culture. (J-Term)
This course offers a three week online course in July 2020 followed by an optional three week January-term in Senegal. The online course is open to all applicants. The in-person January-term is open to college undergraduates who have completed the online term or who provide proof of completion (or the equivalent) of at least one semester of language study.
July Online Course Details
During this three-week online course, you will be placed in a small online class based on a written and oral proficiency evaluation. The course will feature 45 hours of online teaching including program orientation, icebreaker activities, language instruction, and discussion on diverse topics pertaining to Wolof culture. This course aims to build or strengthen your Wolof speaking, listening, and writing skills. Depending on your level of Wolof proficiency, you may have outside readings and assignments and built-in feedback sessions, which will be structured around the exploration of texts and materials in Wolof.
Optional January-term Course Details
During this three-week course, you will complete the next level of Wolof in a small class with placements based on a written and oral proficiency evaluation. An in-country stay will offer you an unparalleled opportunity to immerse yourself in the culture and improve your Wolof proficiency and fluency. Hone your speaking, listening, and writing skills through classroom activities, field excursions, a homestay family experience, and lectures related to Wolof culture, with built-in feedback sessions included. Engage in the language through various forms of art, discussions about religion and ecology.
