Program Description:
This is a closed program. You must be pre-selected in order to participate.
This course provides the student the opportunity to experience a direct relationship with health care consumers from the various cultural backgrounds of the Dominican Republic.  The student will travel to a supervised site for health care identified by the partnering agency Fundacion Amighand Internacional and Pathway Dominicana servicing the under-served people of the Dominican Republic. Emphasis is on providing direct health care to the population, examination of the culture, health teaching, with a focus on culturally sensitive interactions. Students will attend educational seminars in preparation for service work prior to travel.
This course is taught by Clinical Assistant Prof. Maureen Tippen from the Nursing department.

  • Juniors, Seniors, and Graduate students are eligible to apply
  • Nursing and Spanish majors are eligible to apply
  •  3.00 GPA minimum
This is a course being offered in the Winter 2020 term. Students are required to register for one of the following courses:
  • NUR 381— Directed Study-International Service Learning (2 credits)
  • Spanish Independent Study (see your academic advisor)
The program fee is $1,990.00. This includes:
  • Round trip airfare to the Dominican Republic
  • Partnership fee
  • Housing
  • Meals
  • Health insurance
  • Airport transportation 
Additional costs include: Tuition/fees, Immunizations, Personal expenses

  1. If you are accepted, click "Apply Now" below to complete the application.  A $300 non-refundable fee is required at the time of application. The fee must be submitted via check or money order—written to “UM-Flint”—and submitted to the Education Abroad Office. Applications submitted without a deposit will not be considered. 

The University may at any point cancel a program due to unforeseen reasons, including but not limited to low student enrollment and health and safety concerns in the host destination.
